Visitor Visa

🌏 Canada Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)

What is a Visitor Visa?

A Visitor Visa—also called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)—is an official stamp placed in your passport, authorizing entry into Canada for purposes like tourism, family visits, transit, or business. Most visas are issued as multiple-entry and can be valid for up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometric expiry—whichever comes first.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that they can:

  • Leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay

  • Support all expenses, including return travel

  • Be law-abiding and medically admissible, with a clean criminal record

  • Have sufficient ties to their home country (employment, assets, family)

You may also need biometrics, depending on your nationality.

⏳ Duration & Extensions

  • Typical stay: up to 6 months per entry—though the exact leave-by date is determined at the port of entry

  • Extensions: Apply at least 30 days before expiry through IRCC to stay longer legally

  • Super Visa holders entering after June 22, 2023, can stay up to 5 years per entry with a valid stamp

💰 Fees & Processing Times

  • Base fee: CAD 100 per applicant; if biometrics are required, an additional CAD 85 per person

  • Processing times fluctuate based on your country, completeness of application, and IRCC volumes

📄 Application Essentials

  1. Valid travel document (passport)

  2. Proof of funds for your stay

  3. Travel itinerary or invitation letter, if applicable

  4. Medical exam, if you’re staying longer than six months or coming from a designated country

  5. Biometrics, if required

⚠️ 2025 Landscape & Travel Context

Recent data shows Canada issued 1.5 million visitor visas in 2024, down from 1.8 million in 2023—as the country tightens scrutiny to manage population and service pressures. Additionally, visitor and other temporary visas have seen higher refusal rates amid a broader push to limit non-essential travel .

🛠️ Tips for a Strong Application

  • Ensure your financials and return intent are well-documented

  • Submit complete, accurate paperwork upfront to avoid delays

  • Respond immediately to IRCC requests—not responding slows your application

  • If planning long stays (>6 months), consider biometrics, medical exams, or applying for a Visitor Record
